My love for mountains is never ending. That peace, that calm, the beauty, fresh air – just gets me you know! 🙂 I know many of us share the same feeling 😉

And so the mountains called and we were there!!

Chopta turned out to be unexpectedly beautiful. Lush green meadows and mountains, enchanting views of snow capped peaks, cows grazing on the green fields, fox howling and roaming around tents at night! Phew! Chopta is also known as ‘Mini Switzerland’. Well, that turned out to be true! This place is a base camp for Tungnath and Chandrashila trek all round the year.

Uttarakhand is huge! There are many beautiful places in Uttarakhand and Chopta is one of those. There is no fixed itinerary for Uttarakhand as it all depends on number of places one wants to cover. We decided to cover Chopta and Auli. In this blog, I will write about Chopta and Chandrashila.

How to Reach:

  • By Air: Nearest Airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun located 50 kms away from Haridwar
  • By Train:  Train goes up till Haridwar and Dehradun from Delhi and few other stations. From here, the road journey begins.
  • By road: Haridwar is well connected by road. It is 235 kms from Delhi. And Chopta is another 230 kms from Haridwar.

Best Time to Visit:

Chandrashila trek is open all round the year. But the best time is March to June, when we can get a mix of greenery, snow, flowers, clear skies and breathtaking views!

Food:

On route from Haridwar to Chopta, many roadside pure veg dhabas are available throughout the journey. On way to Tungnath, light snacks are available on trek route. No food option available from Tungnath to Chandrashila. Uttarakhand is mainly a vegetarian food zone due to the sacred pilgrimages.

We had to follow option 1  of itinerary as we reached Chopta around 5pm, so decided not to trek till Tungnath the same day, as we didn’t know if we could manage to reach there before dark. The route in and out of Chopta is beautiful and covered with trees and dense forests on both sides. After reaching Chopta, we booked tents there. The tent accommodation was really good and peaceful. The tents were clean and surroundings were gorgeous. The caretaker was a great cook too. Served delicious Maggie, cooked delicious dinner for us. They even provided hot water upon asking. He provided us with so many tips and even helped book the porter for trek in less amount!

The sky was clear at night and was full of beautiful stars, which appeared so close! We even heard the fox howling at night! The camp owner had pet dogs to keep the fox away! So nothing to worry 🙂

Day 3: Trek to Chandrashila from Chopta (5 kms one way- 2.5 to 3 hours one way trek for a beginner with almost no stops for photography and rest!)

We got up in morning with a beautiful view of sunrise from tents.IMG_20170613_053746211

Had breakfast by 7 am, checked out from the camp and started trekking at around 8 am. We hired one porter for carrying my backpack. For those who can’t trek, horses are available till Tungnath(3.5 kms). Carry raincoat depending on weather, no need to carry filled water bottles. Water is available throughout the trek till Tungnath. People of all age groups visit the holy Tungnath temple. Many tourists come to this holy temple all year round. DSC_0694

The path till Tungnath temple is well laid. You may take shortcuts if you want to reach early. I took many! IMG_20170613_091424284

After Tungnath, for trekking to Chandrashila, you may carry 1 litre water bottle. It takes just half n hour to one hour to reach Chandrashila peak from Tungnath. The path from Tungnath to Chandrashila is not a proper track. May get very slippery and risky during rainfall. But for summers, it is a beautiful green non risky path!DSC_0676DSC_0642DSC_0569

We reached Chandrashila by 10:40 am. Localites and other trekkers said that the view of sunrise from Chandrashila peak is stunning. Sadly we missed it 😦 But anyway, we got a beautiful view too as there were less clouds 🙂DSC_0550DSC_0581DSC_0532

We trekked almost non stop for reaching Chandrashila with a fear that clouds might haze the view after afternoon, so on returning journey, we stopped a lot for photographs! We even decided to visit Tungnath temple after returning from Chandrashila peak and not before.DSC_0708

Had lunch there and drove to Joshimath as we had our next day booking at Auli. We reached Joshimath at 5:30 pm and called it a day.

You can read about the Auli trip here

So, this was all about our Chopta- Chandrashila trek. Happy trekking 🙂
